Michael Nagel: Q&A
Q: Hi Mike! So glad you could come in recently for a Precision Hydration Sweat Test with me. Please tell me briefly why you decided to invest in the test.
A: I have suffered from dehydration issues for many years. I have tried about every product out there, and just “drinking more” was not working. The basic sweat tests were OK on just telling you fluid loss, but that was only part of the equation; what I was losing ( lots of sodium) was the issue. I did an Ultra on April 23 (50k) and suffered; temperatures hit 90 degrees, and although I drank a ton- I got dehydrated. My strength coach suggested consulting Precision Hydration, which started my journey.
Q: So, what were your main symptoms of sodium depletion then, during longer workouts/races?
A: I would start feeling like I had the flu, would feel very nauseous, and unable to eat, very “woozy.” A few times, I would start vomiting. After three races of IM distance, I ended up in the medical tent needing an IV. I was literally at the point of leaving the endurance world. I loved the people and the sport, but it was not ‘loving me back” making me sick all the time.
Q: What were your findings from the test?
A: My sodium loss was more than double what my coaches had guessed I needed ( 1863 gross), so working with the PH and Brooke team, I plan to ensure I am taking in enough sodium. I practiced this past summer with the product in sweltering conditions, tolerated it well, and felt great after long workouts: no excessive bloating, post-workout dehydration, and fatigue. I use the PH plan designed for me and feel much better.
Q: What’s your product preference for sodium replacement, and how much do you need?
A: One thing that has helped is using the PH 1500 before race day, and then on the morning of the race, it gets me started, hydrated, and on track. I use the different tablets from PH to keep me on track, depending on the length of the race.
Q: You have a fascinating race schedule ahead for 2024! What are you looking forward to the most?
A: I have a big year this year. I am trying to qualify for Boston again this year at Mesa and Mountains to Beach, and then my wife and I are going Ultra for the second half of 2024 at the SpeedGoat 50K and UTMB 50K in Chamonix, France; we are excited about experiencing the Alps. PH will be there with me for all of them.
